Service Description

The Tabla is one of the most unique and revered percussion instruments in the world. It has become fundamental to Hindustani Classical music, and is now used in many genres and music forms all around the world. Though the Tabla is most commonly heard in an accompaniment setting, it is also widely played as a solo instrument, where a tabla player is the main instrumentalist and displays a spectrum of different types of compositions over the course of 1-2 hours. Over 10 weeks, you will be introduced to the intricate, highly developed practice of learning and playing Tabla in an accessible, fun, and communal environment. The aim of this course is to provide you with the basic knowledge and techniques needed to be able to begin playing confidently both on your own, and in collaboration with other musicians. Through traditional oral learning methods, and careful, guided practice, you will walk away with the ability to play a set of phrases, a basic theme (Kayda) and a number of variations (Paltas), and begin playing time cycles (Taals) and grooves to accompany songs and chants.
