The Language of the Guru’s In this 7-week beginner's Gurmukhi course, you will learn to read, write and pronounce Gurmukhi. You will be reading simple words after the first week, and by the end of the course, you will have the knowledge and the confidence to begin reading Gurmukhi, on your own! Gurmukhi, which means, “from the mouth of the Gurus,” is the script and language of the sacred writings of the Sikhs. It is alive with the Divine vibration, of the words, of the Sikh Gurus. In their state of bliss and enlightenment, Divine poetry flowed through them and touched the souls and the hearts of the people who listened. When we learn to read Gurmukhi, we can connect more deeply to the essence of the Shabad or the banis, or the mantra we are reading, or singing. Reading Gurmukhi gives you the most direct route to the sound current which the Gurus spoke, allowing you to bypass the various pitfalls of transliteration. Relying on the romanized transliteration of Gurbani can be confusing and frustrating, as the roman alphabet is limited in its ability to fully represent all of the different sounds and tones within Gurmukhi. “When I read and connect with Gurmukhi, the language of the Gurus, something awakens within me and I feel deeply at peace and connected to God." Sangat Dhyan Kaur is an American Sikh who has been studying and learning Gurmukhi for the last 6 years, while living both at the Millis Ashram in Massachusetts, and now in Amritsar, India where she has fully immersed herself in the study of Gurmukhi, Gurbani Kirtan, Punjabi, and meditation. Her peaceful and meditative nature will help you to feel relaxed and comfortable while learning, and her knowledge and understanding of Gurmukhi will help you to deepen your experience with this beautiful language, and script. This course consists of 7 weekly livestream sessions via Zoom that will take place on Thursdays from 7pm to 830pm EST. There will also be an optional reading practice on Mondays at 3pm EST. Classes will be recorded so that you have the opportunity to go back and watch them again for future reference and learning.
