Service Description

Sundays at 2PM EST 1.5hr/week PLUS an optional mid-week 1 hour check in. The Tabla is one of the most unique and revered percussion instruments in the world. It has become fundamental to Hindustani Classical music, and is now used in many genres and music forms all around the world. Though the Tabla is most commonly heard in an accompaniment setting, it is also widely played as a solo instrument, where a tabla player is the main instrumentalist and displays a spectrum of different types of compositions over the course of 1-2 hours. Over 12 weeks, you will be introduced to the intricate, highly developed practice of learning and playing Tabla in an accessible, fun, and communal environment. The aim of this course is to provide you with the basic knowledge and techniques needed to be able to begin playing confidently both on your own, and in collaboration with other musicians. Through traditional oral learning methods, and careful, guided practice, you will walk away with the ability to play a set of phrases, a basic theme (Kayda) and a number of variations (Paltas), and begin playing time cycles (Taals) and grooves to accompany songs and chants. We will cover: Basic phrases and language (Paranth) of Tabla Hand positioning and technique Exploring themes and variations Counting exercises to develop timing and rhythm Riyaaz - how to practice Basics of accompaniment For this course you will need: A set of Tabla (If you need help sourcing one please contact Sukhmanirayat@gmail.com) A tuning hammer and baby powder (the powder is used to ensure there is no moisture transferred from your hands to the skin of the instrument) A laptop/tablet, and a zoom account. You will need your device to be facing you, with yourself and your instrument in full view A mat or cushions to allow for a comfortable seated position on the floor A notepad and pen A metronome or metronome app (any basic metronome app will do) You will also have access to: Weekly video tutorials to recap each lesson and summarize homework “Tabla Talk” - a weekly check in (usually mid week), where Sukhmani will be available on zoom to answer any questions you may have about the lessons Recordings of each class and “Tabla Talk” A group forum where you will be able to ask questions and communicate with Sukhmani and other participants
