Service Description

An introductory harmonium course co-led by Sangat Dhyan and Sat Tara. Singing Kirtan, which is devotional music to God, is an incredibly healing practice for oneself, one’s family, and one’s community. This online course is a way to begin your Kirtan journey on the harmonium with three Mantras; Aad Guray Nameh, Chattar Chakkar Varatee, and the Mool Mantra. It includes foundational teachings from the Sikh tradition of Kirtan, focusing on how to play the harmonium, how to sing and understand musical notation, how to keep the rhythm, how to open one’s voice, how to pronounce and understand the Gurmukhi words in each Mantra, a basic understanding of the history of each Mantra, and support tools and teachings to experience confidence, devotion, and meditative awareness in your Kirtan practice. This course consists of 13 livestream sessions taught by Sat Tara Kaur and Sangat Dhyan Kaur. Sat Tara has worked with Snatam as her assistant and co-teacher since 2015, and Sangat Dhyan, who also teaches Gurmukhi courses through our school, has been singing and studying Gurbani kirtan for the last 7 years. The course is a combination of group instruction and 1 to 1 feedback and guidance with each student. The attendees for this course range from being complete beginners with no prior musical experience, to people with musical experience, but who have had no prior experience with Sikh traditional Kirtan. In addition to the Saturday classes there will also be an optional midweek practice and support zoom session on Wednesdays from 7-8am EST. “Sat Tara Kaur is a kind and perceptive teacher, who has the capacity to meet her students at their level, and inspire them to embark on a journey into chanting that has the capacity to bring forth joy, personal discovery, and musical empowerment.” -Snatam "Sangat Dyan Kaur's peaceful and meditative nature will help you to feel relaxed and comfortable while learning, and her knowledge and experience with devotional music, and the Gurmukhi script, will support you in deepening your practice and your own learning experience." - Sahej Atma Please allow for 30-60 minutes of practice time each day while taking the course for maximum benefit. You will need access to a harmonium, which can be ordered through our school here - https://www.kirtanandkundalini.com/shop
