Intermediate Tabla (2024-A)

Service Description

Level: Intermediate Date: Jun 16 - Sep 1 Time: 11AM EST 1.5hr/week PLUS an optional mid-week 1 hr check in. Price: $597 Teacher: Sukhmani Rayat This course is for students who have completed the Basics of Tabla course. If you have previous experience in playing Tabla but did not participate in the Basics course, please contact sukhmanirayat@gmail.com before signing up. This course will aim to refine and improve on the techniques you have already learned, whilst expanding your knowledge of tabla to encompass more complex vocabulary and compositions. We will be creating a solid practice routine to develop speed, accuracy, stamina, and fluidity in your playing, utilizing the skills you learned during the beginners course. Though traditional oral learning methods, and careful, guided instruction, you will walk away with a strong sense of riyaaz (practice), an introduction to many types of tabla compositions, the ability to play a 15 minute tabla solo in Teental confidently and expressively, and the basic knowledge of multiple different taals and grooves to accompany other musicians. We will cover: New vocabulary and more sophisticated techniques Developing and deepening your riyaaz (practice) Complex Kayda/Palta/Tihai Basic Tukras (small compositions) Structuring a 15 minute tabla solo Learning Dadra (6 beats) and Teentaal (16 beats) For this course you will need: Your Tabla A tuning hammer and baby powder A laptop/tablet, and a zoom account. You will need your device to be facing you, with yourself and your instrument in full view A mat or cushions to allow for a comfortable seated position on the floor A notepad and pen A metronome or metronome app (any basic metronome app will do) You will also have access to: Weekly videos/audio recordings/notes to summarize each lesson “Tabla Talk” - a weekly check in (usually mid week), where Sukhmani will be available on zoom to answer any questions you may have about the lessons Recordings of each class and “Tabla Talk” A group forum where you will be able to ask questions and communicate with Sukhmani and other participants at any time If you require financial aid, please contact Sukhmanirayat@gmail.com

Cancellation Policy

Group & Private Classes can be rescheduled up to 48 hours before the class. After 48 hours there is no rescheduling or refunds allowed. Courses can be refunded up to 30 days before the start of the course, minus a $55 administration fee. After 30 days the course fee minus the $55 administration fee can be applied to another course within 1 year. After 1 year the credit will expire.
